Learning Environmental Print

✔ Environmental Print surrounds us in the home and community. It is the print that is found in our everyday lives including:

  • Labels on food
  • The logo of a favourite restaurant
  • Traffic signs
  • Street signs
  • Names of buildings

Environmental print is usually the first print children recognize and it plays a strong role in helping children begin to understand that letters and symbols mean something.

The NWT Literacy Council has developed a free How To Kit (available online or as a downlaodable PDF) which contains many examples of environmental print and includes instructions and templates for a variety of games, including a word scavenger hunt and signs and symbols bingo.
